But I'm a cat person, I tell you! And he has a face only a mother could love. And seems to have a body that was not meant for that face.
I'm going away at the end of June for over a week. Who would take care of him??
But someone left him off in my friend's neighborhood, and she has two dogs, and a cat . . .
He's staying on her back porch, just until his owner shows up (how likely is that? no collar) because she's canvassed the area with fliers and contacted the local TV lost dog/cat guy, who will announce it. In a down-turning housing market, many have to shift to no-animals-allowed apartments when they lose their houses . . .
But I have two cats! I'm just, well, I'm not sure . . . He doesn't even have a TAIL, for heaven's sake; just a little bit of a thing.
Update: D does not want a dog, and feels very strongly on this issue, so my friend is looking for someone else to adopt this stray (who, it seems, likes to chew on lots and lots of things . . .)
poor dog. poor thing. and we'll never know his past. hope he finds a home--don't feel you must take him, but hope that someone comes along that wants a dog just exactly like him!

i married a man who considered himself a cat person. 10 years later and the puppy worships the ground he walks on. And he feels about the same about her. Save the poor puppy! Puppy love rules!
ReplyDeleteI have read that a large problem lately is people that have been forced to downsize are dumping animals since they have had to move into no animal housing..
Hm. Well we can't rescue all the animals from shelters. So if he's not a good with you family, maybe you shouldn't.

ReplyDeletethe Animal shelter has a huge volunteer group here in Santa Fe. I can hardly watch the ads for please to adopt these animals. But I know that we're highly likely to get a dog from the pound when we get one...
ReplyDeleteIt's hard, isn't it, to not take in every stray.
I love dogs but they sure do take a lot of work. They are more like children than cats and you have to find someone to take care of them when they travel. Your cats may not take to him either. Mine happens to love dogs.

ReplyDeleteBut I could not take a cat in our house, because our Kiki dog hate cats, always friendly Kiki changes totally, when she sees a cat.

I've heard a few news stories about the increasing crises of strays because of not only the housing market, but also the economic crisis - in particular the rise of gasoline and how many families can no longer afford to feed the furry members of their families so they turn them out.... yes, yes, everything is connected.
LOL! It looks like you've got yourself a dog. I kinda wouldn't mind getting one this way...it seems like maybe it was meant to be.
ReplyDeleteAww! What kind is he? If you take him to a vet's office, they can scan him for a microchip. Poor guy! But happy day that he found his way to you.
ReplyDeletea very sickly stray cat found us and we took him in, he loved being an indoor cat and loved the vet - that's how bad his life outdoors was. He was very affectionate. One day six years later someone didn't close a door properly-- he just walked out the door and vanished. We searched for him for a long time. I like to think someone took him in since he was a real people loving cat.
ReplyDeletehas D met the puppy? and don't worry about the cats - mine have accepted R with very little drama at all. once the dog learns the cats are not toys, you're good. but i do echo another comment: dogs are a lot more work than cats. as you are home much of the day, that may not be an issue. i vote go for it! and puppy & R can have a play date!!

ReplyDeleteNo good sounding me out, we'd take anything in if it needed a home. We once had a gypsies terrier turn up and live with us for a while, the smell was unbelievable! Then there was the racing pigeon oh and the kitten with the poops. Not to mention the hegehog and the Bluetit fledglings that the neighbour took out of her dogs mouth. Actually talking about that neighbour she was Jasper's orginal owner, she kicked him out because he had fleas, so where was he to go huh?
Someones gotta love em.
Hard to turn away an animal in need. I tried that with a kitty, but my sons allergies proved too big an obstacle.

ReplyDeleteWe are about to go kitten shopping, since it's the season here, big time. Our older cat just loves a kitten gets all motherly and you'd think he'd given birth.
Oh Tuts, if only I was nearer I would have him! I'm a right sucker for housing stray creatures and nearly all my cats have just 'turned up'!.

I can understand d's reluctance....I love the concept of having a dog living with us, but not the reality. for now we are quite happy with occasional visits from the kids dogs and various friends' dogs.

the reality of dogs is they become the neediest of family members. They can't take care of themselves the way cats can. They need a certain level of attention, long walks, and gnaw on the floor tiles or your favorite shoes when bored or lonely. Dogs are very emotional people.
ReplyDeleteoh, and I love dogs, and think they're worth the work they bring with them. It's just that my cats are so mellow and easygoing and no work at all most of the time.
