But the dog does get into things like baby rabbits and squirrels and that's bad enough. Hmm, not a garter snake, nor a coral snake nor The Habu (that one is found in Okinawa, probably elsewhere in the tropics), nor a black mamba (I'm pretty sure those don't live in your neck of the woods). So I am no help at all. Isn't that special?
Tut, that's a Southern Ring-Necked Snake you have there. They don't bite, but if you pick them up or otherwise scare the bejabers out of them they're liable to crap on you.
Glad Roy was able to identify that for you! We had a pretty big garter snake in the yard yesterday. The dog took off after it, and it went through the neighbors fence. She spent the next futile hour sniffing around looking for it. Poor thing.
Well it's not a Red Bellied Black Snake, a Brown Snake, a Taipan, Tiger Snake or Carpet Snake . .nope not a Green Tree Snake or a Krate or a Yellow Bellie's Black Snake . .sorry they're the only ones I know . .and none respond to 'Shoo . .Shoo . .!" Apparently the bastards are deaf. Hope you're pussycats are OK. We used to have a milk man who wacked them with a chain and hung them over the garden fence! Ah such is life in a country where everything conspires to kill you!
it wet areas we have black racer snakes up in the catskills they are small like the one shown and shy, the race away when humans are around. They are very common north & south.
Greetings from Finland, Beth! I can see, that you are well and active ! We had a great journey to China and now I am waiting for a summer and visitors here. Bird cherries started yesterday to flower and sun is shining, not all quite al night long, but soon!
@Roy, your eyes are way better than mine! I was gonna say a black adder( seen those in Europe ). With folks importing "exotic" pets from all over, you just never know!
tut-tut, when in doubt, get the shovel out! I cornered a Cottonmouth, ere it got to Hunter! Usually I won't do in a snake if he's not bothering any-one. But in attack mode?
It looks like a harmless black snake. Most snakes are actually harmless and the most of the others will try to get away before they will hurt you. I don't much like snakes, growing up in the south with poisonous water moccasins in my back yard though.
We don't have snakes here in our part of England my youngest son has been debating with himself for a couple of years now whether or not he wants to keep one as a pet. I'm leaving it to him to make up his own mind, if he ever decides yes I then will have to persaude his father that he really wo't find a snake curled at the bottom of the bed!
It's POISONOUS & will KILL you!!! O.k. well, maybe not poisonous but in my opinion, all snakes will kill me. I'd have a heart attack if one came near me.

At least you know now what it is. I thought that luckily it was a non poisonous snake otherwise your cats would have been goners.
