Thanks

This year, we are just us for Thursday. And I admit, I forgot over the weekend that it was Thanksgiving. I'm tending to gloss over and forget these holidays, and I don't think it's exactly right or fair, especially to L, but with my mother no longer around, I find it difficult to jump, with both feet and eyes wide open, into emotionally heightened days. But, soldier on I will, and have several books/magazines (old copies of the now-defunct Gourmet, a demise I can't quite get my head around; but anyway) open on the floor (where else?) for ideas for Brussels sprouts, parsnips, potatoes, et al. Plus a pumpkin cheesecake pie in a gingersnap crust from Gourmet 2006 that I was going to try, but never did (until this year, that is).

I'm missing more and more our house up above the Trail (Helen, I think it is still for sale; are they getting that much nowadays? I can't believe it), even the mice and the snow in the attic. Maybe I'll waft northward, depending on where L ends up (or not; do I want to be the kind of parent who is always THERE? I think not. We had one in college who moved into her daughter's dorm room and typed her papers and did her laundry: Mumsy.)

Anyway, I've promised L to make homemade gifts this year with her: lip balm, and bath salts, and spiced nuts, and three kinds of chocolate/nut/dried fruit combinations, among other things. We'll see how far we get involved in this, but there is a local source for jars and so forth, so I can't back out for lack of packaging.

Plus, I've gotten some DVDs from the library: Outsourced, Frozen River, and Revolutionary Road (Leonardo and Kate, together again), so there's that.

And school is out until Dec. 1!

Soundslike you've made some good plans for the holiday in spite of missing your Mom. Hope you do have a good Thanksgiving.

Love your gift ideas, Tut! We're going to my husband's sisters and she's not letting us make anything. I'm so programmed to cook this time of year that I'm having a hard time just sitting back and enjoying it - must google recipes, shop for groceries and obsess.

I think I told you the Japanese "warm soup" proverb about how near parents should be to their adult children. But with such a lovely daughter of course you want to be near!

Happy Thanksgiving to you, L and Mr. Tut.

Good luck with all that home made stuff. I make Christmas (no Thanksgiving here of course) as easy as possible so that it's stress free and fun. I know what you mean about not having a parent/s around to share these important holidays with though. I miss mine particularly at Christmas. I'm also blessed with two wonderful adult children who make up for all my losses. Have a wonderful holiday.

Dennis says it's good for humans to jump around and do stuff. Revolutionary Road was a good book--there is a road by that name near Dennis. Dennis has not seen the movie. yet.

I make that pumpkin cheesecake, but with a hazelnut torte on top. It's yummy. FIL insists upon it. I think home made gifts are wonderful. I try to make as many as I can -- the lip balm is also on my list, as is fudge, and I needlepointed two pillows I designed of people's pets...Did you like Frozen River and Revolutionary Road? I like FR, but RR was a bit wee precious and dramatic for me --guess the book is better.....

We had such a quiet Thanksgiving this year and that was fine with me. I skipped the china, silver, and crystal in favor of plain old everyday dishes and sitting in the family room. Loved it. No fussing with company. Good food w/Devoted Spouse. EmmaLou at our feet hoping for something to fall on the floor (it did a few times, wink, wink). My kind of holiday!

The blogwaves were certainly quiet around Thanksgiving . . .

PS: I haven't quite got my head round FB yet but hope to be pleasantly surprised when I do.

TX for your FB messages tut.
