always follow the directions

Bagels did NOT turn out quite right. But then, because of me, we did NOT follow the directions, as one would think we had, looking at D assiduously studying them here.

He decided to start this rather lengthy process just before my dinner preparations were to commence. I intervened, I'm sorry to say, before the bagels could be formed and subsequently placed into the refrigerator to gently rise overnight. Instead, I put the whole dough business in a plastic bag and shoved it in the ice box (where did that phrase come from? hello, Grandma . . .), thinking it was the dough, not the bagels themselves, that needed resting.

Anyway, they came out rather . . . odd.

boiling for 2 min a side, before

going into a 500°F oven

The best of the bunch, pictured below. I understand they don't taste too bad, and certainly better than what passes for same around this latitude.

Yeah, the directions are there for a reason. At least when it comes to cooking, that is. Still, they don't look so bad to me?

Hey, it certainly beats those frozen sliders, right? Fresh, warm, chewy( aaagh! I'm droolin'! )Besides, who said a bagel has to be round, anyway?

Hey, if they taste good and the texture's right, who cares what they look like?

I am pretty sure I have paid good money in a bagel shop for a bagel that looked like that. Tasted fine, just like yours.

The appearance is the least important thing, to be sure. But I have to say, that looks like a LOT of work!

The look rustic.

You must be desperate for bagels! I like them but have learned to live without them here...the best I can do is frozen ones from Picard.

Blog on!

Well anyone who mucks around with yeast is brave in my book. Bagels aren't big here but we have some amazing Jewish bakeries in Bondi of all places! So if the urge takes me . . and yeh, when all else fails, I read the instructions!

That last bagel looks better than any I've seen here in recent years.

Indianapolis has a family busy-ness that makes great bagels, but it's about 2 hrs from here.

Cheers and Thanks for stopping by.

Bagels are really hard! I've tried making them several times. The results were more like hockey pucks than anything edible.

Yours look rustic yet delicious. I salute you!

So glad you are blogging!

once again i am so impressed with your baking forays - first english muffins and now bagels....and then popovers!!

monday I did make focaccia for the first time, which is about the easiest bread project there is, especially when one cheats and uses a bread machine. but as with my adventures into pizza making, it was fun to create a savory concoction for the top
