N. Baker

I know, I know. But I love most of his work. Here's a little piece on Salon.com about writing. And the house in the background? A twin to the one I lived in, in western New England. D once shoveled snow out of the attic. And the ghost; well, it didn't like me much but it loved L and D.

I read some of N. Baker's early novels and can recall quite clearly the one about going up and down (or was it just down?) an escalator. His name reminds me of Robertson Davies, an author who looks a lot like NB and whose novels I have tried and failed to finish. But I'm not giving up! And I might check out N.B.'s latest -- Traveling Sprinkler. It sounds promising. I should read The Antagonist first although it's probably not necessary.

I just learned that N.B. and I share a love of Wikipedia -- I always defend it as one of the best things that ever happened to the Internet -- and a loathing for libraries that are too eager to get rid of the printed page and too fond of electronic media. I own and use a Kindle, which I never thought I'd like, but I still prefer having a real book in my hands.
