various

I'm completely, and I mean completely, swamped with projects. I bit off more than I can visually chew, as it were. Altar update tomorrow, though.

But I digress; I have a request. My UPS delivery man, Van, is a musician (stupendous, piano) who is putting out a Christmas album, and would like to know favorite carols, songs, music of the season. If you would, please put your favorites in Comments, and I will pass them along to him.

I have a vast Xmas music collection, and can provide a list of perhaps 100 songs. Lo, How A Rose E'er Blooming is a favorite.

For standard Christmas songs, my favorite is "What Child is This?" But if he has ever heard the Kingston Trio album "Last Month of the Year," it has some amazingly beautiful songs on it: "Bye Bye Thou Little Chid," "White Snows of Winter," "Mary Mild," "Sing We Noel."

How about anything from the movie White Christmas? It's a favorite in my house. Maybe "Snow," that'd be a nice one.

I LOVE 'Most Highly Favoured Lady' - or it might be called the Angel Gabriel.

(his wings as drifted snow, his eyes as flame...)

theres only one tune that i know of, which is the one i love - don't know if there alternatives.

I love really old traditional christmas songs - among my faves are:
the cherry tree carol
the holly and the ivy
the friendly beasts
the wassail song (although it is technically a new year song)

one of my favorite christmas albums is the chieftains 'the bells of dublin' - I love all the songs on that album!!!

I look forward to an altar post! not many playing this week - too much going on I expect - not to mention it was a bit of a 'different' theme

have to seek out the song lettuce mentioned - I don't think I'm familiar with it sounds divine

p.s. looked up lettuce's song and discovered it is a tune by sting - and I do know it....it is sooooo beautiful!

tell van good luck on his holiday album! we'll be waiting updates on the shell....

It's not Christmas until I hear Vince Guaraldi (or Cyrus Chestnut) play "Chistmas Time Is Here" on the piano from the Charlie Brown Christmas album. Also love Silver Bells, Oh Holy Night, Let it Snow -oh and Paul McCartney "Wonderful Xmas Time"

Silver Bells is my absolute Favorite, following by Santa Clause is Coming to town.

My favorite album is Twisted Christmas. The song with the little kid singing "There's something stuck up in the chimney and I don't know what it is, but it's been there since last Christmas" makes me laugh every time I hear it.

I love so many of the classics (knitwithcats already mentioned Little Drummer Boy), but one of my more obscure favorites (and this is weird, coming from a godless heathen like me) is Come Thou Long, Expected Jesus.

ha!

Sting may have done a version of this but

ITS NOT BY STING!!!!!!!!!!

(nothing personal....)

okay. i've been checking...

apparently the music is called "Gabriel's message" and is a basque carol. I never knew that!

you can listen to it here

i love it.

(though when at school we used to sing "most highly flavoured gravy" rather than "most highly favoured lady"...)

and i will go and listen to sting's version now.

I'm totally against the grain here, but from a great pianist, I would love hearing a kind of jazzed up version of "I'll be home for Christmas," or "Have yourself a merry little Christmas."

Then there's always Jingle Bell Rock...

Thank you, everyone! I'm turning all this over to Van. I can't get comments to print out in a string, though. any suggestions on this technical issue??

Little Drummer Boy is my all time favorite, followed by Silent Night and Hark the Herald Angels Sing.
